How to Measure Your Dog for a Coat or Clothes: Simple Size Guide + Mistakes to Avoid

Ordering clothes for your dog shouldn't feel like a guessing game. Three quick measurements are all it takes, and once you've written them down, every future order gets easier. Grab a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler) and a few treats.

The three measurements that matter

Have your dog stand naturally on all fours, head up. Treats help.

• 1. Back length: From the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. This is the number most size charts are built around.
• 2. Chest girth: The widest part of the ribcage, right behind the front legs. Wrap the tape all the way around.
• 3. Neck girth: Where the collar normally sits. You should fit two fingers under the tape.

How snug should it be?

For each girth measurement, keep the tape flat against the fur, snug but not tight. If you can slide two fingers underneath, you're measuring right. Write the numbers down in inches and centimeters so you can use any size chart.

Five mistakes to avoid

• Measuring a curled-up dog. Always measure standing, a sitting or lying dog shortens the back by inches.
• Guessing by breed. Two Beagles can be a full size apart. Measure your dog, not the breed average.
• Using weight instead of measurements. Weight tells you nothing about chest depth or back length.
• Pulling the tape tight. A compressed measurement leads to a coat that pinches at the shoulders.
• Ignoring the size chart. Sizes are not standardized between brands. An M in one shop is an L in another, so check the chart every time.

Between two sizes?

Size up. A slightly roomy coat still keeps your dog warm and dry; a tight one restricts movement and usually ends up unworn. For full-body pieces like raincoats, also check the leg openings and neck height.
